The Third Annual Leduc Optimist Spelling Bee Was Another Enjoyable Event
The Black Gold Optimist Club of Leduc held their 3rd annual Spelling Bee on Saturday, April 26th in the auditorium of the Leduc Legion. A total of eleven Grade 5 students (one of the scheduled 12 students was unable to attend); from six Leduc elementary schools, competed in an oral contest to demonstrate their spelling skills. It was educational and enjoyable for all in attendance.
The contestants were identified solely by randomly assigned numbered tags.

All contestants received framed Participation Certificates, some donated gifts and varying cash prizes according to final placement. First, Second and Third Place ribbons were awarded to those finishing in those positions.
THANKS to the students, schools, teachers, parents, guardians, family, friends and other attendees.

CERTIFICATE of PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT and COMMUNITY SPIRIT with CASH BURSARY
This is a new initiative for our club and Willow Park Elementary in Leduc is the first school selected, randomly, for the Award. We thank principal Rhonda Brunken and the school staff for allowing us to do this project and for helping create the suitable guidelines. It will be rotated to a different elementary school each year.
On Thursday, June 23, 2011 at the school awards assembly, these two Optimist Club awards were announced and handed out to one Grade 3 male and one Grade 6 female student. The deserving students were selected by school staff from any grade.
Knowing the importance of education these days, our club is hoping this type of incentive for effort, achievement and concern for others will help to spur on all students to higher goals and promising futures. One female student and one male student were selected from a worthy group of nominees for this award. The document states that each selected student:
- Displays initiative, scholastic effort and academic achievement
- Demonstrates respect for school rules and the rights of others
- Promotes friendship among all students and staff
- Shows a willingness to be involved in school or community activities and events
- Has a respect for self, respect for others and is responsible for personal actions
- Best exemplifies the Optimist Creed (view by clicking the Creed tab)
Congratulations to both students and their supportive families and teachers.
